Anyone who was in high school during the '80s might recall the smell of clove cigarettes after listening to the danceable ""Blister"" while more moody pieces like ""The Lowdown"" and ""Antique Future"" beg for birthing another chapter of This Mortal Coil. Keep in mind, these were my early years and my lens was that of a curly-headed, suburban, well-loved, nerdy little boy. Technology was emerging at a fever-pitch, Nintendo was king, music was boss, fashion was weird, movies were iconic, entertainment was everywhere, in-person relationships mattered, ugh, I miss it so much. I was young, but it just felt like the world was generally slower and happier. In my experience the 80s, and rolling into the 90s were some of the greatest years of my life. Without this movement, I would have never got to hear my all-time favorite, new-wave-influenced band, the Cure. I was too young to see or understand new wave's importance, but nevertheless, I am so happy it happened. It's a mirror of emotions and thoughts of the times the artist is living in. Late last year, Modern English reissued two of their classic albums, 1981’s Mesh and Lace and 1982’s After the Snow, each with new artwork from original designer Vaughan Oliver. Provided to YouTube by The Orchard Enterprises I Melt with You (7' Mix) ![]() Hades’ bride and queen was Persephone, whom Hades had kidnapped, though she only lived with him for part of the year. Eventually, Hades and his siblings were rescued by Zeus, the youngest child of Cronus and Rhea, who forced Cronus to regurgitate the children he had swallowed and took the mantle of “ruler of the universe” for himself. Like his first four brothers and sisters- Hestia, Demeter, Hera, and Poseidon-Hades was swallowed shortly after his birth by Cronus, the lord of the universe, who had received a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him. FamilyĪccording to the poet Hesiod, Hades was the first male child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Hades could also be symbolized by a number of animals, such as snakes, roosters, or screech owls, as well as certain plants, such as the cypress, mint, and asphodel. He is often seated on a throne with Cerberus, the three-headed dog, crouched menacingly at his side. In the artistic representations we do encounter, Hades appears as either a young man or with a dark beard. Hades was so terrifying to the Greeks that he was almost never depicted in ancient art. 1st century CE Roman copy of Greek original. Statuette of Pluto (Roman Hades) holding a cornucopia. Among the other attributes of Hades were a scepter, the keys to the Underworld, a cornucopia, and Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog of the dead. ![]() Hades was often represented riding a chariot driven by pitch-black horses. In one famous myth, he let the hero Perseus borrow this helmet so that he could sneak up on and kill Medusa. Perhaps as an extension of his name, usually thought to mean “the unseen one,” Hades was said to possess a helmet of invisibility. Hades was regarded as a dark, merciless god. But Hades was also a god of wealth and fertility since good things like crops and precious metals came to mortals from his underground realm. Hades was, first and foremost, the god of death: it was he who ruled the Underworld, and indeed, his name was synonymous with the Underworld. Hades was known by several epithets, including agēsandros and agesilaos (meaning “he who leads people away”), polysēmantōr and polydegmōn (“ruler of many” or “host of many”), klymenos (“the notorious”), and eubuleus (“giver of good advice”). The name Plouton was inherited by the Romans, whose god Pluto possessed the same characteristics as Hades. 490–323 BCE), the god’s name had evolved into Hades.įearful of speaking the name of the god of death, the Greeks took to calling Hades by the alternative euphemistic name Plouton, meaning “wealthy.” This other name presumably reflected the fact that the Greeks’ riches, such as crops and precious metals, came from below the earth. Another common poetic alternative was Aidoneus. The earliest attested form of the name, used in Homeric and Ionic Greek, was Aïdēs. In antiquity, Hades’ name was generally interpreted as meaning “the unseen” or “the invisible one.” This is a rare case where the original, folk etymology seems to have been correct: modern scholars have traced the name “Hades” to the Proto-Indo-European word * ṇ-uid-, meaning “unseen.” Pronunciation The name had evolved into its more familiar form, Hades (Ἅιδης), by the Classical period (ca. The earliest documented version of the name “Hades” was Aïdēs (Ἀΐδης), used in the Homeric epics the Iliad and the Odyssey (eighth century BCE). ![]() ![]() “So it’s like, you know what? Was I at least in the right spot, generally? The answer came back: Nope-I was about 1.5 miles away. After 10 minutes, I sent a text with a screenshot asking for a hint. I moved around, swinging my phone from side to side like it was a metal detector. This was the first location, inside the Find My app, where the AirTag noted its whereabouts, along with the dirt path where I was looking for it. This function connects to an AirTag directly within 20 to 30 feet. I should have been on top of the AirTag, according to the app, so I pressed the locate button. I arrived at a large park and walked down a dirt path. The app knew exactly where it was sending me. The location of the AirTag in Find My didn't fluctuate or change. I got in my car and tapped the directions button inside the Find My app to take me to it. I could see that the tag was just over 3 miles away. I opened the Find My app and within a few moments, I saw that it found the AirTag and placed it on the map. Once my AirTag had been hidden, I set off to find it. It's now where an AirTag gets tracked, too. ![]() The Find My app is the same place you can locate a lost iPhone, MacBook or AirPods. It uses the Find My app to show its last known location. The AirTag is recognized and then asks to be named. ![]() To re-create the experience of losing an AirTag, I gave one to a friend and asked them to drop it somewhere within a 10-mile radius.Īn AirTag is set up simply by bringing it next to an iPhone. The Apple AirTag Loop can wrap around straps and comes in navy, yellow and white. That means that if you drop your keys in the woods, they'll be harder to locate than if you drop them in a mall. If an item with AirTag attached is lost in a remote area, then its location detection might be less accurate. This is a private and anonymous process that doesn't allow anyone beyond its owner to discover the AirTag's location. Finding a Lost Item With AirTagĪn AirTag works by pinging the location of passing iPhones to update its whereabouts in the world. Each AirTag can accommodate between one and four characters. There are 31 preselected emojis, numbers zero through 50 and letters a through z that can be used for the engraving. Apple does offer free engraving, which helps, for example, differentiate tags if you buy the 4-pack. By default, an AirTag is just white on one side and silver on the other. Accessories are one way to customize the stark disc, but engraving it is another. The AirTag is $29, and most accessories start around $13 and go up from there. (Luckily, there are plenty of AirTag accessories available.) The AirTag has a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery, a speaker and wireless connectivity all contained inside its compact shiny shell. AirTag Size and Designīefore we get to the results of my scavenger hunt, let's touch on the design of an AirTag. To take the experiment farther, I asked a friend to drop one somewhere around town to see if I could find it again. A capable iPhone can point you in the direction of an AirTag within inches. Using an iPhone 12 Pro with a U1 chip made it easy to locate items within close distances. At first, I had my kids hide an AirTag around the house, and I found it quickly. Waiting around to lose something can be time-consuming. But, the important question here is, How does AirTag work? Apple is following the lead of other companies, including Tile, in its creating a similar tracking product. This type of Bluetooth tracker isn't new though in fact, in technology-years, it's quite old. If you do misplace the item, you can use the Find My app to locate it again. The idea with an AirTag is simple: Attach it to something you might lose. ![]() I'll let everyone know more as I get finished, but so far so good. In fact, cutting the small strips of butyl adhesive flashing tape was easier to do than messing with the play doughy duct seal compound. In those areas with a lot of wires, I have also just used the butyl adhesive flashing tape just cut into smaller strips to accommodate the small spacing around the wires. That seems to work well in those tight areas with a bunch of wires. For the areas near the wires, I have used Swervepf's recommendation of the duct seal compound. So far, I am going through the house soundproofing the electrical boxes with the butyl adhesive flashing tape that I posted about earlier. The good thing about that duct seal compound you recommended is that it is cheap. I suppose that is one of the reasons why these soundproofing companies have come up with these expensive flat sheets of play dough-like flat acoustic backer putty pads. It's kind of a pain in the butt to take this huge play dough block thing and tear off little pieces to seal around everywhere that is needed on the electrical boxes. I got some very similar duct seal compound in the electrical isle at Home Depot. Good and cheap! Well, not all that good, but decent. And there are also many different brands, some with no logos and completely black for the all butyl adhesive look. For about $20 you get a 6" x 50 ft roll that will probably allow you to do all the electrical boxes in your house and then some. Here is a pic of a Home Depot product (Protecto Wrap Window Sealing Tape), and this stuff is really cheap. Here is a link to one car audio enthusiast that used Pella Smartflash Window and Door flashing tape to dampen the sound vibration in his car. I have even read about car hot rod "pimp my ride" type of builders using this stuff (butyl adhesive flashing tape) for use to dampen sound and vibration in their car. I admit, I can't take credit for this idea as many people have come before and probably have done this. Granted, the acoustic putty stuff is thicker and better, but for the price that anyone can get the butyl adhesive flashing tape for, you can double wrap, triple wrap, even quadruple wrap your electrical boxes, and it will still come out cheaper than the acoustic putty pads. ![]() There are many different brands and it is basically tape flashing for use when installing new doors and windows. And you can get this stuff at any hardware store pretty much. I just need something that is thickish in material, similar to that putty stuff and it has to be cheaper. I found some similar acoustic outlet putty pads at Lowes, but it's like $30 and it only has enough pads to do maybe 5 single gang outlet boxes! So, I got to thinking. OK, so the above pic is all well and good, but I can't help it. |
